athlete movement and nutrition screening

The Ottawa High Performance Centre movement screens athletes utilizing a combination of basic and selected functional movement pattern tests from FMS and SFMA.

The purpose of athlete movement screening is to identify limitations in movement which can reduce the effectiveness of training and/or predispose athletes to injury during training or sport. The movement screen is not meant to assess an existing injury and we recommended that individuals with an existing injury see one of the OHPC's therapists for an orthopedic assessment and treatment of that injury. More information about our therapy staff is available on this website.

Individual Athlete Screening

Assessments can help to identify weaknesses and imbalances in an athlete which may act as potential barriers to individual performance or contribute to their potential risk of injury. Athletes seeking individual assessment or a strength and conditioning program are directed toward John Zahab, our strength and conditioning coach.

For more information on John go to the strength and conditioning page of our website or to www.johnzahab.com

Team or Group Screening

Team or group screening is an efficient and cost effective way to identify individual athletes at risk of injury, and potential barriers to performance within a group. The OHPC staff compare the statistical results of both FMS and SFMA screens of the individuals in a group to identify trends in weakness and imbalance across the group. This information is then utilized to improve upon existing training programs, suggest program changes tailored to specific athlete needs within the group or to develop a group program if one is required.

Nutritional Screening

Nutritional screening is an additional element which can be included in the team or group screening process. It allows an athlete to identify areas for improvement related to nutritional and hydration strategies used to optimize performance. Results of nutritional screening can be compared with training and competition requirements to evaluate an athlete's fueling and refueling strategy. Appropriate dietary interventions can be implemented based on these results.
